My thanks to American Patriot for his contribution.

As much as I hate pollution and dependency on coal, gas and oil, and as much as I'd like solar power to be all the things that pro-solar people claim it to be, the truth is out there. You must dig for it, but it's there.

Solar power isn't feasible yet. That doesn't mean we should stop working on it, but it does mean that investments like this one should never happen on the taxpayer's dime.Mad Jackhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06190137186843630543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21829866.post-43119135637920011962011-08-18T11:45:07.990-04:002011-08-18T11:45:07.990-04:00Great post by Maggie, and great supplemental info ...Great post by Maggie, and great supplemental info by An American Patriot.

Don't worry -- Marcy Kaptur's green slush fund will save the day. From the NF3 that has 17,000 times the effect of CO2 (using equal units), to the seeming partnerships of "clean energy" that relies on "dirty energy" to power it.

It makes on wonder if any of these studies can get into peer-reviewed literature, or if they are intentionally kept out by AGW-activists.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12712378814180005416noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21829866.post-77919440487854551572011-08-18T07:11:38.991-04:002011-08-18T07:11:38.991-04:00Am. Patriot - I've never looked at the energy per acre and that's an interesting piece to include in future analysis.

I've seen multiple studies and reports that detail what it takes to make a solar panel and how the energy used to produce them is much higher than any energy they save through their usage. Also, the mining and production of the panels is ecologically damaging, producing pollution, heavy metal byproducts and greenhouse gases.

Here is one article talking about the 'ugly side' of solar panels:

http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2008/03/the-ugly-side-o.htmlMaggiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12677808307727487766noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21829866.post-27935477374169554242011-08-18T06:54:29.501-04:002011-08-18T06:54:29.501-04:00You really want to see something eye-opening? Yes, Toledo is not exactly prime real estate for solar power, but that's part of the point of different sources of energy. For simple comparison, look at the "energy density" (power/acre) of Davis Besse. Even if you include the wildlife habitat that is part of their property, the amount of energy produced per acre is staggering compared to the new solar field.

We only have so much land in the US. It makes on wonder what the eco-Nazi's do to rationalize the destruction of our national wildlife areas to produce electricity to meet our demands. They gripe about pollution (and no one is for pollution specifically) and then they gripe about alternate power generation's effect on wildlife ("windmills kill birds!").

Perhaps this cognitive dissonance is what is really making them seem angry all the time.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12712378814180005416noreply@blogger.com
