New York Times as a 'truth vigilante'?

From the Wall Street Journal' Best of the Web column by James Taranto:

The Truth Vigilantes
Their mission: hunt down facts and destroy them.

Hilarity ensued yesterday after Arthur Brisbane, "public editor" of the New York Times posted a blog entry titled "Should the Times Be a Truth Vigilante?" He was compelled to publish a follow-up post hours later to reply to his "large majority of respondents" who answered his question "with, yes, you moron, The Times should check facts and print the truth."

You just can't make this stuff up!

  1. Maggie,

Truth ... hardly! Vigilante ... quite possibly. After all the NYT has long considered itself above the law, the facts, and the truth. The elite of the "Gray Lady" instead see themselves on a mission; one whose equal hasn't been seen since "The Blues Brothers".

(No insult was intended to "The Blues Brothers", its actors, or its music by such comparison.)
