City Spending Updated

Well, at least the vote was 7-5 instead of unanimous for spending more of our tax dollars unnecessarily....

City Council approved $75,000 for Citifest, a non-profit organization that provides entertainment (festivals, concerts and parades) in downtown Toledo. Citifest is a good organization, but City Council said they had no where else to cut in the budget before imposing a garbage tax of $5.50.

Turns out, they did have places to cut and while they were willing to knock off $25,000 from the mayor's request of $100,000, this is still $75,000 that didn't need to be spent.

So, having the extra money from the garbage tax, they've now spent the first month's collection. Stay tuned - I'm sure this isn't the last update to our city spending.

Maggie...

I was aghast at the free willy spending. I sat there wishing I had a overide button.

75 grand for citifest? Do they even do anything worthwhile anymore? The party in the park used to be a great destination until the city got greedy and ruined it. The rib-off was the last great event downtown and now it's in Maumee. So what and where is that money going towards now?

Maggie - i think you ought to include the money that was going to be a "Zero net gain/loss" for the proposed WiFi services. Supposedly they could come up with a million plus to do this without increasing the budget...but how? They said they could "pull it from other places". If they can "pull" from other places, then the money that is in those "other places" can be cut...and should be cut.

Luke - if they go forward with this, I will. But in trying to be consistent with my postings, I don't actually add the spending until it's voted on by council or expended (if it's under the $10,000 or doesn't need an ordinance) by the administration.

But don't worry - like many others, I'm keeping a close eye on this...

Now you didn't seriously believe that any of that money would be going back to the taxpayers, did you?

Why, we'd just waste it spending it on something that WE wanted. . .

After all, there are votes/voters to buy with that money; or, perhaps a sweetheart deal to be made.

Sheesch!
