(TOLEDO, OH) - Hey Toledo, something fishy happened today at Fifth Third Field.

This afternoon at the Toledo Mud Hens game, a new fish in town joined the action as “Spike”, the official mascot for the Toledo Walleye hockey team, was revealed.

Spike joined the team straight from the Maumee River and can’t wait for hockey season to start. Spike plans to be around town in the next few months as he anxiously waits for the hockey season to start on Friday, October 16 at the new downtown arena.

Spike hopes you’ll join him at one of his many appearances at the Mud Hens remaining home games or at a Wendy’s location near you.

TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo Walleye hockey team and Toledo Bullfrogs football team are pleased to announce the sale of mini-plan ticket packages.

The Toledo Walleye will hit the ice at the brand new Downtown Arena in October of this year!

The Toledo Bullfrogs will take the field at the arena in March of 2010.

Yep - that's the new name of the Arena Football 2 team that Lucas County wants.

As part of the new arena project, Toledo Arena Sports (basically the same organization as the Mud Hens) plans on hosting an East Coast Hockey League team, the Walleye, and this AF2 franchise.

So that gives us the Mud Hens for baseball, the Walleye for hockey and the Bullfrogs for football ... all in keeping with the 'swamp' theme since we are part of the Great Black Swamp.

Toledo Walleye???

I'm sorry, but I don't like it as the name of our new hockey team. I realize that it's a popular fish around this area...but it's a fish - and not a very challenging one at that...

Yes, it can see well in murky waters, to the point that the water is often characterized as 'walleye chop.' But that's about it. It doesn't put up much of a fight when caught - and it does taste good ... but do we want a hockey team known for being 'tasty when eaten'?

To top it off, the Walleye is the state fish of Minnesota. Will people think our team is from that state instead of from Toledo? Or will they figure that only Toledo would give such a name to a hockey team?

I guess I was hoping for more ... something that would be fierce or ferocious and inspire fear in our opponents. And I'm one who does believe that something strong and forceful can still be 'fan and family friendly' ... but at least it's better than 'peckerheads,'

Now, if they could be as forthcoming with the finances for the home of this new team...
