Happy New Year

To welcome in 2009, we will do our traditional New Year's Day activities: eat blackeyed peas, cornbread and greens, watch HGTV's Tournament of Roses Parade (showing everything with no commercials) and football - it doesn't really matter who is playing.

It's always a comforting feeling to continue family traditions, and I hope you enjoy the start of the new year in your familiar ways.

New Year's Day is every man's birthday. ~ Charles Lamb

Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbors, and let each new year find you a better man. ~ Benjamin Franklin

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~ Hal Borland

The Old Year has gone. Let the dead past bury its own dead. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. All hail the duties and possibilities of the coming twelve months! ~ Edward Payson Powell

Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances; but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front, and take no interest in the things that were and are past. ~ Henry Ward Beecher

Maggie,

In this most interesting of years politically, may I add to your list (surprise, huh):

Go on, then, in your generous enterprise with gratitude to Heaven for past success, and confidence of it in the future. For my own part, I ask no greater blessing than to share with you the common danger and common glory ... that these American States may never cease to be free and independent.

- Samuel Adams

Ah - and from my favorite, Sam Adams, as well.

Excellent choice - thanks for the addition!
