Happy Birthday Sam Adams

"It does not require a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority keen to set brush fires in people's minds.”

“Among the natural rights of the colonists are these: first, a right to life; secondly, to liberty; thirdly to property; together with the right to support and defend them in the best manner they can.”

"How strangely will the Tools of a Tyrant pervert the plain Meaning of Words!"

"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil Constitution, are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or to be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men."

"If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin."

I will raise a toast to Sam today with, well.........A Sam Adams.

Nice job Maggie. His writings and quotes are so applicable today, 200 + years later, yet school kids don't know his name. Accept college kids when his winter ale comes out.

I too will raise a toast to Sam, who Thomas Jefferson called the, "Patriarch of Liberty". A man wary of strong central government, I believe that he would find lately that his greatest fears had been realized.

Though mostly unrecognized as one of our Founding Fathers, perhaps there is still time to return to some of the clear thinking of he and his fellow revolutionaries.

Sam Adams the patriot was the son of Sam Adams the brewer. The younger Adams inherited his father's brewery, but was a better patriot than businessman and it went out of business.

Nonetheless, Adams, Henry, Paine, and the other Sons of Liberty created excellent media events for the cause of revolution and should be congratulated for their civil disobedience.
