GOP fails to meet commissioner filing deadline - Wozniak to run unopposed

As reported first by Toledo Free Press's Michael Miller during Eye On Toledo tonight, the Lucas County Republican Party failed to meet the filing deadline for naming Jan Scotland as the replacement candidate for the commissioner race.

As Miller explained, according to Patrick Kriner, chairman of the Lucas County Board of Elections, the Secretary of State was adamant that the filing deadline was a firm time and late filings would not be accepted.

He reported that a faxed copy was apparently received at the BOE, but not prior to the 4 p.m. cut-off.

This is a terrible blow to the local GOP, its new chairman and Scotland. I predict that some will try to spin this and blame the Republican election board members. However, there is no one to blame for this except the party chairman, Jon Stainbrook.

If I recall correctly, the chairman has to sign the form naming the replacement. When I filled the vacancy on the ballot in 2002, that was done the night I was endorsed by the party and the form was filed the very next day. There is no excuse for the party to wait until the last day and then miss the deadline.

Sadly, the biggest losers in this are the voters who will be without a choice and without a needed discussion of the issues in Lucas County.

Maggie, can this Stainbrook guy be trusted? How can something so crucial to the job description be screwed up in such a major league fashion? I'd love to say this was incompetence, but one has to call into question his motivation for his inaction. A person in his position just doesn't do this - and if they were to, it would be grounds for immediate termination in just about every place of employment I can fathom. One has to wonder if there were backroom politics being played here - whether within the party or by forces outside. Its easy to suggest, given the turmoil the party has been through in recent years.

The real losers here are the citizens of the county. Once again LC politics is business as usual, and the Big (headed) Three have their "mandate" to rain down tyranny on the serfs. Anyone interested in some LC real estate? I am losing my will to fight back against these idiots.

mick - my first reaction upon hearing this was not one of surprise. Stainbrook has many talents, but administration and paying attention to such details is not one of them.

However, as the lone republican in a sea of democrats during my elective service, I've concocted my share of conspiracy theories as well.

I plan to do a post on the conspiracy aspect, because if - IF - there is a conspiracy, it's got nothing to do with the commissioner race.

And yet people wonder why the Republican party in Lucas County remains so weak in a Red(ish) state.

Why don't some of the conservative citizens of Lucas County participate more, be vocal, VOTE, and run for office? These kinds of events and occurrences is why. The popularity of radio programs such as Maggie's, and WSPD in general shows that there is a solid conservative base in the County.

It just seems that when someone might be willing to throw their hat in the mix and work for improvement of the GOP here, something like this happens and dampens their spirit. Personally, it gets me every time.

Maggie,
I just got a chance to listen to Stainbrook on Fred's show this morning, what a piece of work. Now I understand why you weren't suprised. How could this guy be put in charge of putting away folding chairs, let alone the head of the county GOP? How could he not understand fully the responsibility of his position in elections. And above all, the guy doesn't even have the intestinal fortitude to man up and say he screwed up, even when faced with the information that Fred found in mere minutes on the internet!

Jon Stainbrook was clearly put into his position to carry out this job in the exact manner that he is doing. My questions are 1) who had a hand in getting this idiot put in charge, and 2) what was the real motivation, aside from the further deterioration of the Lucas County GOP.

Go get 'em, Maggie!

Maggie,

After listening to Mr. Stainbrook this morning on Fred's show, it is apparent to me why the Republicans are no force to be reckoned with in Lucas County. While Fred played "tap dance" music at the end, I was hearing the "X-Files" theme in my head. Mr. Stainbrook hinted at conspiracies and blamed everything but alien invaders for his own lack of proper preparation.

Since I have taken off in this direction, let me add the scene from the original "Blues Brothers" movie. I am sure you remember when John Belushi ran into Carrie Fisher in the tunnel and proceeded to recite every lame excuse in the history of lame excuses. Like Joliet Jake, Mr. Stainbrook hopes that his charm (and raised eyebrow) will divert our attention from the fact that he was wrong.

Not likely, Higgins my boy! If this morally corrupt, spineless incompetent excuse for leadership thinks he can divert attention from the fact that he blatently and colossally screwed up, he's got another thing coming. Whatever prize JBR gives him for being a good little soldier, I hope is worth the humiliation he is and will continue to endure.

Jon Stainbrook is just another Lucas County politician with no core values or ideals of his own. Is there any party in this town devoid of such scoundrels?

In the midst of all the Democratic Party shenanigans and tomfoolery, at a time when Republicans should be kickin' butt locally, the "powers that be" give us the Barney Phyfe of county Republican chairs. You could NOT write this stuff if you tried.

Well Higgins, since you put it that way! LOL

I don't know about anyone else, but Ive given the local republicans 30 loyal years since I became old enough to vote. But I've had it.

I'm going to talk to the libertarian folks and see what they have to say. I just have no confidence in any of them any more.
