#DAD09 - John Fund

John Fund - Wall Street Journal:

* opponents of freedom in health care don't want to debate the actual issues ... Bill Clinton resurrected out the 'vast right-wing conspiracy' claim ... even though 60% of the American people think the plan costs too much...so vast...

* at the rate they're going, it's going to be 'so vast' that it will unite Republicans, Democrats and Independents in opposition...who said they couldn't unite the country?

* amendment to delay vote until it had been posted for 72 hours so people could know what was in the bill...defeated 13-10...they don't want people to read it. Sen. Max Baucus said they don't have a moment to waste, even though most of it won't take effect for years...what's in it they don't want us to know about?

* 32 Dems have signed on as sponsors of the 72-hour waiting period in the House.

* never again should we have bills the size of telephone books that re-order our economy that get passed without being read - no more! We want them to read the bill.

* 95% of the American people support 'read the bill' ...

* in 1977, Reagan lost nomination for president and he gathered his supporters and advisers: We lose when two things happen at the same time 1) when we lose our principles and 2) liberals move to the right and promise to govern as moderates...that's what's just happened. But Carter will be forced to govern from the left due to liberals in Congress (and the liberals who pay the bills)...and he will fail, because those policies always fail and the American people will rise up. Reagan was right...

* led to the quote: "A recession is when your neighbor loses his job, a depression is when you lose your job and a recovery is when Carter loses his job."

* Pres. George H.W. Bush raised taxes - violating his 'no new taxes' pledge - and Bill Clinton campaigned as a moderate...and won, but then governed as a liberal with the largest tax increase ever. Reagan again proven right ...

* But then came 1994 and the Contract with America...

* every 16 years, it seems people forget what happens when a liberal president and a liberal Congress rule in Washington. We beat back liberalism in 1977 and in 1993 - and we can do it again in 2009....

* roughly every 75 years, a generation is called upon to defend America's freedom... Today we must defend America's freedom from the government plans for bigger government. This may not be as severe a price as loss of life, but loss of freedom is a price too high...
